Disclaimer: I've known the author for over 10 years. Although we aren't super close, I consider him a friend. What I love most about this book is the sheer boldness of it. Anyone who voices an opinion about music is asking for trouble. Yet Chip is willing to wade into the beautiful muck of the nearly endless Metal subgenres, and render a verdict.
And render, he does. I followed the original blog upon which this book is based for nearly six months when it started. As I'm a metal novice by comparison, I learned so much about bands I would never have even known existed. Each album represented is described in concise and definitive language all fully based on the author's opinion. There is no attempt at "objectivity" thankfully; he calls it like he sees it, and with the clear knowledge to back it up.
The final section, Examining The Body, is a terrific collection of statistics about the albums mentioned. The section on top albums by year is a time warp, sure to bring back memories of life in those years.
Buy this book if you love Metal. Buy this book if you think you hate metal. I promise you will find something in here which will turn your head around.
I took off a star because I wish the album covers were in color. That being said, this could be a great adult coloring book!

666 Days of Metal Chip McCabe 9781545278031 Books Reviews
I had high hopes for this book, but ended up truly disappointed. Here's why
A. The author is obviously biased against black metal, doom, and and death metal, with these genres disproportionately represented. In fact it's about half of the list. These genres certainly deserve a place in this type of book, but not nearly in the quantity represented.
B. By overlooking aor and glam metal, the book does not cover the full spectrum of the genre. It's like reading a book about the best basketball players of all time that doesn't include players that played on the Los Angeles Lakers or Boston Celtics. Bands like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, dokken, ratt, Guns n Roses, Etc certainly deserve a place in this book.
C. The writer doesn't seem to really know that much about metal in general. He places albums by top shelf artists such as Queensryche well behind talentless and irrelevant black metal and doom bands. How in the world is operation mindcrime number 602? And how in the world are the rest of Queensryche's releases before mindcrime omitted? All of which should be not only in this book, but probably in the top 50. He also calls Blind by Corrosion of Conformity a ' Stoner Rock' album, which is the furthest thing from the truth. That is a thrash album. He also includes a non-metal release, heritage by opeth. I could go on and on.
E. there's nothing resembling a critical analysis of the music... instead you get what amounts to small biographies of each band, 3 or 4 sentences with a ton of generalizations and pigeonholing. For bands with multiple entries on the list, this gets very repetitive. It would have made more sense to maybe keep the list to about 300 and have full page reviews as opposed to the small bios.
F. The writing is poor in general. Grammatically there are several typos and the author has not been trained in the proper use of inserting commas. They are missing everywhere, pretty much on each page.
There are only two Pantera albums on the list. Huh?
The Black Album is not listed. Again, huh? it's only the number one metal album of all time. The author should have at least paid respect to the highest selling metal album of all time by including it.
In summation, with the right author, and a little bit more substance and a change to the format and structure, this would have been a great book. Instead, I threw $30 away into the wind.
Great book.
I love this concept! This book is so well done and well written! It's great for anyone who loves music, regardless of genre!
Great collection of musical acts put together in a format that won't stump your brain after too long reading it! I really enjoyed this book and found it to be informative, fun and good to pick up and read anytime of the day or night.
